Description
The James Bond franchise has been reimagined countless times across film, literature, and games, but “007 First Light” marks something genuinely different. Developed by IO Interactive the Danish studio best known for the Hitman series this title doesn’t adapt an existing film or continue an established Bond storyline. Instead, it builds a completely original origin story, tracing how a brash young man becomes one of the most recognizable spies in fiction.

What Is 007 First Light?
007 First Light is a narrative-driven action-adventure game that puts players in control of James Bond long before he earns his famous “00” designation. Rather than dropping players into a fully formed secret agent, the game follows Bond as he goes through training and executes missions to become a fully-fledged MI6 agent. The story builds toward a defining moment often referred to in the game’s marketing as “earning the number” the point at which Bond officially becomes 007.
This approach is notable because most Bond media assumes the audience already knows Bond as a seasoned professional. IO Interactive’s game instead explores the messier, more human process of getting there, examining the mistakes, doubts, and formative experiences that shape him.
The Story: From Naval Officer to Secret Agent
The narrative begins with an unexpected premise. According to the game’s official description, a heroic act sees a young Naval air crewman named James Bond offered a place in the newly revived Double 0 program. This is a striking departure from the familiar image of Bond as an already-polished operative; here, he starts as a military officer whose bravery catches the attention of MI6.
Things quickly go wrong. A mission intended to stop a rogue agent ends in tragedy, forcing Bond to team up with his reluctant mentor, Greenway, to uncover a wider conspiracy and prevent a looming coup at the highest levels of government. This gives the game a political thriller backbone, blending personal stakes with a larger, world-threatening plot a structure fans of classic Bond storytelling will find familiar, even though the specific plot is entirely new.
A Story About Becoming, Not Adapting
Series producers were careful to distinguish this project from previous Bond games that retold film plots. Per statements from IO Interactive CEO Hakan Abrak, the idea of depicting Bond’s origin as an event only briefly shown in the opening of Daniel Craig’s Casino Royale was something both IO Interactive and the Bond rights holders at Eon were enthusiastic about, favoring an entirely original beginning over adapting an existing film. This gave the writing team creative freedom to shape a Bond who feels distinct from any cinematic interpretation while still respecting the character’s DNA.
Meet the Cast
James Bond, Reimagined
Casting a new, younger Bond was always going to draw scrutiny, and IO Interactive settled on Irish actor Patrick Gibson for the role. Gibson said he was “pretty stunned” upon learning he had landed the part. The creative team wanted a performance that captured youthful arrogance rather than seasoned confidence.
Narrative and cinematic director Martin Emborg noted that Gibson brought a kind of “built-in impatience” that felt perfect for a young Bond, and wanted the character to project an unearned confidence that players would recognize as naivety from a reckless young man. Meanwhile, senior combat designer Tom Marcham aimed to infuse the game’s combat with an “inner rage” tied to Bond’s background as an orphan, giving physical confrontations an emotional undercurrent beyond simple spectacle.
Supporting Characters and Big-Name Talent
Alongside Bond, 007 First Light brings back familiar MI6 figures M, Q, and Moneypenny while introducing original characters built specifically for this story. Bond’s mentor Greenway plays a central narrative role, and the game’s antagonist roster includes a flamboyant, dangerous figure known as the Pirate King Bawma, portrayed by musician Lenny Kravitz. Actress Gemma Chan also joins the cast as Dr. Selina Tan, a character tied to the game’s central conspiracy. The game also features cameo appearances from internet personalities, including Khaby Lame, Jacksepticeye, and Shroud, blending traditional Hollywood casting with modern digital creator crossover appeal.
Gameplay: Stealth, Combat, and Choice
007 First Light is played from a third-person perspective and blends action, stealth, and investigation. 007 First Light mixes gunfights, hand-to-hand combat, stealth, and exploration to create a globe-spanning spy adventure, and players are given considerable freedom in how to approach obstacles.
Go Loud or Go Silent
A defining pillar of the design is player choice. Missions can be approached aggressively through firepower, cleverly through gadgets and infiltration, or persuasively by bluffing past guards, reflecting the flexible, systemic approach IO Interactive is known for from Hitman. Combat isn’t simply about shooting; Bond can also parry attacks and execute takedowns, and the game distinguishes between subdual and lethal force. Notably, Bond typically relies on non-lethal methods, only being granted a “licence to kill” once enemies demonstrate genuine intent to kill him, at which point lethal force becomes permitted, a clever gameplay mechanic that ties directly into the character’s larger arc of “earning” his eventual title.
Inspirations Behind the Combat System
Interestingly, IO Interactive didn’t simply port over Hitman’s slower, puzzle-like design philosophy. The studio drew inspiration from the freeflow combat of the Batman: Arkham series and the large, destructible action set pieces found in the Uncharted franchise, aiming for a game with more forward momentum than the deliberate pacing typical of Hitman. At the same time, the team wanted combat to flow seamlessly into cinematic moments while still preserving meaningful player choice, without the game becoming a simple reskin of Hitman’s systems.
Gadgets, Vehicles, and Bond-Style Flair
No Bond story would be complete without iconic gadgets and vehicles, and 007 First Light leans into that tradition with real-world brand partnerships. The game features a specially designed Omega Seamaster chronograph watch and the Aston Martin Valhalla sports car as signature items tied to Bond’s arsenal. Beyond the Aston Martin, players can expect a selection of Jaguar Land Rover vehicles and a Triumph motorcycle, alongside Leica camera equipment used for field reconnaissance, all reinforcing the game’s commitment to authentic, tactile spy-fantasy detail.
Technology Behind the Game
A New Take on the Glacier Engine
Under the hood, 007 First Light runs on an upgraded version of IO Interactive’s proprietary Glacier engine, 007 First Light technology behind the Hitman World of Assassination trilogy. For this project, the studio pushed the engine further, incorporating a proprietary volumetric smoke system that the studio claims has never been implemented anywhere before, along with ray tracing and fully dynamic global illumination. The result is a visually ambitious title designed to showcase cinematic lighting and atmosphere across its various locations.
A Blockbuster-Sized Budget
Ambition came with cost. Development of the game spanned multiple international studios, as production took place across IO Interactive’s offices in Copenhagen, Malmo, Istanbul, Barcelona, and Brighton. Unsurprisingly, this scale made it the studio’s most expensive undertaking to date reportedly exceeding $100 million in development costs before marketing, making it by far the biggest financial commitment in IO Interactive’s history.
Modernizing Bond for a New Audience
One of the more talked-about aspects of development has been the studio’s deliberate effort to update Bond for contemporary sensibilities. Art director Rasmus Poulsen explained that the team wanted to avoid certain outdated character traits, particularly attitudes toward women expressed in earlier Bond stories that modern audiences would likely view as sexist. The studio also paid close attention to linguistic authenticity, going so far as to remove Americanisms from Bond’s dialogue to strengthen his identity as a British agent, famously changing a line using “parking lot” to the British “car park” after fan feedback during an early gameplay demo.
Thematically, 007 First Light also aims for more substance than simple spy spectacle. Poulsen noted that a recurring theme in Bond stories is a warning against utopian thinking, and 007 First Light explores this through a narrative centered on artificial intelligence and its flawed role in decision-making within defense industries a timely, modern angle for a franchise rooted in Cold War-era espionage.
The Soundtrack: A Star-Studded Affair
Music has always been central to Bond’s identity, and 007 First Light continues that legacy with an impressive lineup. The game’s theme song, “First Light,” was co-written and performed by Lana Del Rey alongside veteran Bond film composer David Arnold, blending Del Rey’s atmospheric vocal style with Arnold’s orchestral sensibilities. The broader score comes courtesy of UK duo The Flight, with additional musical cameos from DJ Dimitri Vegas and drum-and-bass act Chase & Status, who contribute to a standout club-set sequence in the game.
Release and Platforms
007 First Light launched for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. It is a single-player-only experience, with no current plans for a multiplayer mode. 007 First Light reached “gold” status, meaning development was complete and ready for manufacturing in May 2026, ahead of its global release.
Final Thoughts of 007 First Light
007 First Light represents a bold gamble: rather than leaning on nostalgia or adapting a beloved film, IO Interactive chose to build an entirely new Bond mythology from the ground up. By focusing on the character’s formative years, blending flexible Hitman-inspired gameplay with cinematic action, and enlisting major names in film, music, and internet culture, the studio has crafted something that aims to feel both familiar and fresh. Whether it succeeds in redefining Bond for a new generation of players remains to be seen, but its ambition creatively, technically, and financially is undeniable.
